Asociación de Profesores de Español de India (APEI) or Association of Teachers of Spanish, is the first association of Spanish teachers in India.

It has received encouragement and support from the Embassy of Spain, as well as the embassies of Latin American countries, including Mexico, Chile, Guatemala, El Salvador, Bolivia, Peru and Venezuela.

In addition, the Instituto Cervantes of New Delhi has offered its full support and collaboration to our association.

Dr. Gaurav Kumar (President)

Dr. Gaurav Kumar is Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Centre of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Latin American Studies, at Jawaharlal Nehru University, India. He holds a Ph.D in Philology of Spanish from this institution with a thesis titled “Analysis of Grammatical Errors of Indian Learners of Spanish as a Foreign Language”. As a Fellow of the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship program, he completed a "Master’s in Teaching of Spanish in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts (MULTIELE)" in Spain and the Netherlands. He has edited three books and has also compiled a Spanish-Hindi dictionary along with several research articles. Also, he has developed MOOCs online course for "Gramática Española: Nivel Avanzado" for the ePG Pathshala Project of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Dr. Gaurav Kumar has widely promoted hispanism in India and abroad through conferences, publications, workshops and cultural events that perfectly aligns with responsibilities corresponding to the position of the President of the APEI.

Meenakshi Gupta
(Vice President)

Meenakshi Gupta is an accomplished Spanish educator with over 30 years of experience in the field. She is currently a Spanish teacher at Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi. Meenakshi holds a Master’s degree in Spanish from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and serves as the Vice President of APEI. Her deep expertise and commitment to language education have made her a respected figure in the academic community. She is associated with CBSE as the core course committee for course development from 2020. She is associated with doing confidential work with CBSE since 2020 with the academic unit. Associated with the confidential evaluation unit of CBSE since 2017. Also works with National Testing Agency (NTA) for development of question papers for undergraduate level.

Dr. Noorin Khan
(Vice President)

Noorin Khan, a Latin Americanist and currently an Associate Professor at Jamia Millia Islamia University has done her doctorate on the narrative of the Colombian author; Alvaro Mutis, M. Phil dissertation on the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez from Jawaharlal Nehru University and continues to work on Latin American literature, culture, politics and current affairs. She has received the Hispanist fellowship consecutively twice from the Government of Spain for research and has multiple scholarships to study in Mexico, Spain and Italy. She has been a visiting scholar at Colegio de Mexico in Mexico City, has done various courses on teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language at the Complutense University, Madrid as well as courses at the University of Salamanca, Spain, and at the Centre for Research on International Politics, (CIPI) at Habana, Cuba. She has also attended various workshops, seminars and conferences at national and international levels along with chairing, moderating and delivering plenary lectures. She is a reviewer for many international journals of Latin American and International Studies. She has been giving lectures at national and international fora on various topics as visiting professor in University of the Balearic Islands and University of Granada in Spain, National University of Rosarios and National University of La Plata in Argentina, Externado University and Juan de Castellanos University Foundation in Colombia, as well as in the Political Research Division, Lok Sabha, Government of India for Spanish language. She was also the International Election Observer of the national elections 2024 in Venezuela, and is a member of the International Association of Hispanistas. She speaks, writes and reads Spanish, English, Hindi and Urdu fluently and has good knowledge of Italian and basic knowledge of French and Kashmiri. She has written various articles for national and international journals and books. Her area of interest is Spanish Language and Latin American literary, political and cultural studies.

Mayank Malik
(General Secretary)

Mayank Malik, recipient of The Great India Scholarship, is a dedicated and experienced Spanish language teacher with over 12 years of enriching experience in educating students at various levels, from school children to postgraduate students. He has taught at several institutions like Delhi Public School, Manav Rachna University, Indira Gandhi National Open University and YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association). He has authored several books including Los Alfabetos, Vivos and Repaso series, being used in several educational institutions. He has been involved with several Hispanic embassies on various projects for promoting Spanish language and culture of all Spanish speaking countries.

Karishma Sharma
(Treasurer)

Karishma Sharma is a dedicated and accomplished Spanish educator with over 14 years of experience as a TGT Spanish at Ramjas School, Pusa Road. She holds a Master's degree in Spanish from Delhi University's prestigious GRS Department and has further enhanced her expertise with a Foreign Language Diploma (FLE) in teaching from the same institution. A recipient of the "Teaching Excellence Award" by S Chand, Karishma is recognized for her commitment to academic excellence and innovative teaching methods. Her tech-savviness is evident as she has been a certified Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert for the past 5 years. Beyond her teaching role, Karishma is a founding member and the Treasurer of the Association of Spanish Teachers in India (APEI), where she actively contributes to the advancement of Spanish language education across the country.

Dr. Anshu Shekhar
(Executive Member)

Dr. Anshu Shekhar is an Assistant Professor of Spanish at the Dept. of Germanic & Romance Studies of University of Delhi. He is an experienced Spanish language educator with nearly a decade of experience in both private and public higher education institutions. Dr. Shekhar has served as an Erasmus+ Professor at the University of Malaga in Spain. He has also been involved in developing content for postgraduate course in Spanish for IGNOU and contributing to an AI-powered Spanish language learning, assessment, and score improvement platform. Dr. Shekhar holds a Bachelor's, Master's, M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Spanish from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and has received teaching skills training in Spanish from the Instituto Cervantes. His key research interests encompass Hispano-American literature, the pedagogy of Spanish as a foreign language, and translation studies, resulting in numerous publications in esteemed international journals.
